The collection includes all material assembled by the WPA Historical Records Survey, the Writers Project, and the Art Project. It consists of surveys of state, county, municipal, church and legal records; of clippings, historical and biographical sketches, topical essays, and war services files. The bulk of materials have been separated under the branch names responsible for creating them. Thus the general divisions exist as the Historical Records Survey, the Writers Project, and the Art Project, with two boxes of misfiled and unsorted material grouped under Miscellaneous. Within these divisions, materials are grouped by file name; age, County Inventory File, Publications files, etc. Photographs filed in a C collection of the same number.
